The Largest List (201+) of Cyber Attacks

According to a report published by The Council of Economic Advisors the US economy incurred a loss between $57 billion and $109 billion in 2016 because of malicious cyber activities and attacks. On average, news of a cyberattack on a company leads to 0.8% drop in their market share within the first 7 hours . The average cost of a data breach is about $6.3 million when typically over 50,000 records are compromised. The staggering costs associated with these attacks highlight the need and importance of cyber insurance.

By studying credible data sources, Zimlon has put together the most comprehensive list of cyberattacks witnessed in globally (see table below)..

The table identifies the companies that have been victims of the biggest cyberattacks of all time, along with the number of records breached with each attack. This list will be continuously updated based on feedback.

A cyberattack can attract multiple lawsuits especially for  a large organization that stores the personal information of all its employees.  Typically, such companies also have access to personal information about their clients/customers, which makes the situation worse as the attack may render the clients and their systems vulnerable. Needless to say, the potential lawsuits and expenses of handling such a situation can become a nightmare for companies.

In terms of revenue loss, one of the biggest cyberattacks is “WannaCry,” which affected over 150 countries and is estimated to have caused a revenue loss of about $1 billion. The shipping company Maersk incurred a loss of about $300 million because of a cyberattack named “NotPetya.” In September 2017, Equifax announced a data breach that exposed the personal information of 147 million people. This breach cost the company over $4 billion!

Home Depot suffered losses of $300 million as a result of a data breach in 2014. Home Depot’s customers were also affected, forcing the company to reimburse customers whose cards had to be reissued. The cost of these reimbursements amounted to $8 per affected card according to the Credit Union National Association, leading to total losses standing at $440 million.

Uber Technologies suffered a data breach that exposed the personal data of approximately 57 million customers and drivers. An illicit payment of $1 million was made by the company as ransom to retrieve the information from the hackers. In this particular breach, license numbers of about 600,000 Uber drivers, which were linked to their identities, were stolen. Uber had to spend an additional $100,000 as a “bug bounty” to have external parties test their software for vulnerabilities. Uber’s valuation also decreased dramatically after the incident, with Softbank, a Japanese firm, agreeing to valuing the company at $48 billion, which was much lower than the valuation of the company in the previous year ($70 billion), according to Reuters.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not just the big fortune 500 companies that are prone to cyberattacks.  Even most claims for small businesses start off in the range of $500,000, while major claims could amount to more than $2 million. According to AIG Insurance, about 55% of small businesses have experienced a data breach, and 53% of organizations have had multiple breaches.

In the wake of such attacks, it has almost become mandatory for companies to be covered by cyber insurance. Currently, only 30% of the companies in the US are estimated to have some form of cyber insurance.

The average cost of cyber insurance in the US is $1,501 per annum. Delaware is the most expensive state in the US to buy cyber insurance from, with an average insurance rate of $1,626 per annum. North Carolina has the second most expensive average rate of cyber insurance at $1,611 per annum. Arizona, on the other hand, has the cheapest cyber insurance rate at $1,139 per annum, which is 24.15% cheaper than the national average.

Cyber insurance rates depend on several factors, such as

  • Location

  • Type of business

  • Number of credit card/debit card transactions being processed

  • Storage of sensitive information (social security numbers, date of birth)

  • Size of the business

  • Level of liability coverage

  • Choice of deductible

  • Online security measures implemented

Losses related to cyber insurance are predicted to hit $6 trillion by 2021. Thus, for companies, investing in cyber insurance is definitely a stitch in time.

If you think we have skipped a  big cyberattack, please mention it in the comments, and we will add it to our list.
