Driving under Influence and its impact on auto insurance premiums in the US state of North Carolina

North Carolina is one of the least expensive states to buy auto insurance in the United States. With an annual average insurance rate of $1085, North Carolina is the fourth least expensive state to buy auto insurance. Most cities in North Carolina have average insurance rates below $1000. But, accidents and alcohol related offences could double your premiums. Let us compare the auto insurance rates in the different cities of North Carolina and understand how your driving record impacts your insurance premium.

The main factors that determine how much premium you pay are: your age, gender, location, make and model of the car, and your driving record. The average annual insurance rate is $808 in Asheville, which is the lowest in the state.

Accidents are known to drive your insurance premiums up. In Asheville, you would have to pay an annual average rate of $995 after one accident. After a second accident, you would have to pay as much as $1485 every year. If you are convicted of an alcohol-related offense, your premium would go up to $1503.

In North Carolina, Fayetteville has the highest insurance rates. We could put the premium increase on a DUI conviction into perspective with this comparison: a DUI conviction in Asheville will result in you paying almost $500 more than the regular insurance premium rates in Fayetteville.

You could take a defensive driving course to bring down your premium to $1278. In addition to the above, most car insurance companies follow the Insurance Services Organisation’s (ISO) surcharge policy, and increase your premium up to $970 for the first two cars of a multi-car policy, and up to $1131 for a single-car policy. In Fayetteville, these figures are as high as $1398 for a multi-car policy and $1631 for a single-car policy. Also, a DUI conviction could increase your insurance premium rates to $2167 in Fayetteville.

In extreme cases, insurers have been known to ask DUI convicts to buy ‘high risk insurance’ or to cancel their coverage altogether. This could make it really difficult for you to buy auto insurance. The next time you are tempted to get behind the wheel in an intoxicated condition, keep in mind the long-term financial consequences of your decision. It would help to plan ahead and call a cab.

Latest Auto Insurance Reviews in North Carolina

Progressive

$100 for 1 Month

I've been pretty pleased with Progressive so far. The monthly rates are fairly comparable with other insurance companies that I checked with. I like the ability to service my policy online, print out new insurance cards on the spot, or forms that I need with no wait. That is one of the reasons that I switched from my previous insurance agent. I had to wait until business hours to call them to get anything done which can be tough when you work during the day. The 800 number is great when I need additional help too. There is always someone available.

State Farm

$175.00 a month

I am 36 years old and have State Farm for my Auto Insurance. I am married and have two kids. We have two cars on the policy. One is a 2008 and the other is a 2010. They are very basic cars. We pay about $175.00 a month for both of them. My agent is Karen Cook out of Morganton. She is very good and is always very helpful. I drive a very short distance during the week and sometimes a little longer on the weekends. I have been lucky to not have had a wreck or accident in a while. I also have a very good driving record. I would give State Farm Auto Insurance a 5 on a scale from 1 to 5. They have a great customer service and are a very old and respected company.

Nationwide , stacy hill

$63 for 1 Month

I just have liability coverage for my Dodge Stratus because the car is paid off and I feel that collision would just be a waste for a car of this year. I believe I am getting a pretty good deal. I am a 40 year old single female. However, with my driving record which has been excellent for the last ten years; it seems like my insurance should be a lot less. I will however keep the insurance until I can find something a little bit cheaper. I like the agent she is very helpful and you don't have to worry about waiting long for help. She always make sure she answer your questions right away and give you the help needed.
